Welcome In,

Thank you for allowing me to introduce myself and offer up some ideas about what you could anticipate while working with me. I use both lived experiences and formal training to offer consultation to you, from whatever walk-of-life you come from. My practice is rooted in the belief that in the rich telling of your story, you can improve your relationships and make sense of your problems.

As far as my credentials go, I graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Master of Social Work and am actively licensed in the State of New York. In the past decade, I have worked in community-based and academic hospital roles. My work is informed by the ideas of Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered and Humanistic approaches. Part of our work together includes establishing an understanding of who is at your proverbial kitchen table — the folks you can count on to support you in both thick and thin times — and how your relationships with these folks influences your understanding of your self.

Ultimately, you are an individual and my approach will be based on your unique wants and needs. In my personal and professional life, I integrate rituals, meditation, and mindfulness practices. My experience tells me this type of work plants seeds that you can continue to tend to and grow throughout your life.

Joy is an act of self-love and resistance and I seek joy constantly as a way to connect with my own humanity. To cultivate joy you’ll find me in the company of those I hold dear to me sharing a story or a laugh. I love to read fiction and memoirs (check out my bookshelf below!); travel to unfamiliar places; write short stories and essays; drink lattes with my partner; and learn about urban design and community building. I grew up in rural North Carolina and now live in Queens, New York.

I consult with people from various cultures and identities and you are invited to come to sessions exactly as you are. I am committed to changing the narrative for BIPOC folks to pursue therapy. I am passionate about maternal health disparities and their remedies. I am LGBTQIA+ welcoming. I stand against ableism and fatphobia. I specialize in working with folks experiencing chronic illness or disability; caretakers and healthcare workers; and perinatal mental health.

Looking forward to meeting you,

Julia Harr, LCSW, CCM
